Workshop 1 - Adding a voiceover (The Shining)
For this first workshop we have to use a scene from a film/ tv and create a script to voice over the characters thoughts and feelings. I decided to pair up with Jenna and we chose the maze scene from The Shining. We downloaded the scene from YouTube and opened it on GarageBand. Afterwards we created a script which included the mother and son talking. Our intentions for the scene were to convey what a mother and son conversation is typically like when doing an activity. Our voice added mood as you can tell what the mother and son are feeling through, the way they talk such as Wendy is happy when she says, "Isn't beautiful". We recorded the script using my phone in which I sent the recordings to myself to download it to drag it onto GarageBand. Once I had all the clips together, Jenna and I arranged the audio clips to match with the timing of the scene. If I did this workshop differently I would pick a scene with no dialogue, therefore, we could have more speech in the scene.
Workshop 2 – Dubbing Dialogue (Monsters Inc.)
In this workshop we had to pick a scene from a film/ tv series and dub over the original moving image sequence, so it is our voices you hear and not the actors in the film/ tv series speaking. I paired with Jenna to pick a short scene which was a scene with Mike Wazowski and Roz from Monsters Inc. First, we printed off 2 copies of the script and revised the lines whilst watching the scene. This was so that once we recorded the spoken word will be in sync with the moving image. We decided to record each line separately to make it easier to edit on GarageBand. It was difficult at first to get it perfectly synced but it was manageable. Once we finished recording, I started editing it on GarageBand. I dragged the clip of the scene onto GarageBand and muted it so that it was our recordings of the spoken word being heard. To get each recording in sync was difficult as the spoken word was too quick at times so we had to re-record one of the lines which was successful. If I did this workshop again, I would pick a live action scene as I think it would be easier to dub over it than animation.
Workshop 3 - Adding Music (Spider-Man Homecoming)
In this workshop we had to find a scene without music and add library music then create our own music in GarageBand. Firstly, I had to find a scene without music in it which I thought to be hard, so I searched and found a scene from Spider-Man Homecoming that had the music taken out but the spoken word in the film was still in the clip. For the first part of the workshop we had to find library music, so I searched upbeat instrumental music as I thought this would be better than using a song with lyrics. I downloaded a song called Happy and Fun Background music which fit well with the scene. I dragged both the scene and the song onto Garageband and edited the song a little to fade out towards the end instead of cutting it to the end of the scene. For the second part we had to create our own music, so on Garageband I experimented with the different instrumentals as I had never created music on Garageband before. I then found that the Electronic Drum Kit suited best as it had different styles of electronic sounds that are modern and would fit well with this modern movie I chose. I started tapping one key on the keyboard for Depp Tech and recorded that as music that would play until 12 seconds and add another sound. I found that instead I could have the first sound consist throughout and at a certain point add another sound. I found a clapping like sound called Silverlake in the Electronic Drum Kit and recorded that between the breaks of the first sound. I think it worked very well as it is upbeat, modern and fits well with the scene. If I was to do this differently I would use two different instruments such as a guitar and an electronic piano .
