Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 opening scene
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2
In the opening scene of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 we see it is set in the countryside in Missouri as a piece of text appears with the words: Missouri, Earth, 1980. This shows the audience that this specific scene is set before the rest of the film. In addition, this illustrates the costume design is 80s style as the woman is wearing a bright, purple dress with a blouse and the man is wearing jeans with a brown suede jacket. Throughout the scene there is bright lighting which conveys this is a happy, lighthearted scene. There is also very few props as it is just these two characters , a car and a space objects that the man found in the forest. The camera angles used in this opening scene are a worms eye view of the space object on the ground which illustrates how big and unusual it is to this world. Another camera angle is an over the shoulder shot of the two characters speaking to each other shows the audience who the conversation is between, although it is clearly shown that it is only them two in the forest. A birds eye angle is also used when the audience sees the car driving into the car park of the Dairy Queen restaurant which they don't go into, instead they go through the forest. There are a range of shot types in the opening scene such of the extreme long shot at the beginning which establishes the location of the scene. Also, medium close up is used frequently of the man and woman to convey that they have a very close relationship. There are two camera movements in this opening scene. The first camera movement is dolly/tracking in the opening when we see the camera following the car driving on the road. This establishes that the audience will be following these characters. The second camera movement is a crane and the car is moving further away from the camera. This allows the audience to show that the focus is of them two as there is nobody else around and no other cars driving. The style of framing in this opening scene is loose framing. This is because majority of the camera angles and shots are wide or long which illustrates the empty space around these two characters. Although they aren't in complete isolation as there are some background characters the main focus is these two who are in their own world and only care for each other.
